The SMTL provide a diverse scientific and technical service offering for both NHS Wales and commercial clients. Services include:

 

  • Advisory Services: Our Research and Development (R&D) Department provides scientific advisory services ranging from technical and regulatory assurance of documents to health technology assessment (HTA) activities (evidence review, health economics, statistical analysis, market access).
  • Client Information: Further information relating to finance and sample submission.
  • Incident Investigation: The SMTL is funded by the Welsh Government to act as an NHS Wales medical device adverse incident reporting center. Our technical experts investigate a range of non-electro medical devices.
  • NHS Wales Services: Subject matter experts at SMTL represent Welsh Government in several medical device forums and sit on a range of working groups and boards. A key function of the SMTL is to assess technical and regulatory requirements of medical devices, and to provide testing services for NHS Wales Procurement Services.
  • Quality Assurance: Our independent Quality Assurance (QA) department oversees all our test facility related activities. In addition, our QA specialists offer a comprehensive commercial QA service, from consultation and advice to undertaking audits of medical device manufacturers.
  • Testing services: Dedicated Biological and Physical Testing departments offer a range of accredited testing services covering national and international standards, as well as numerous in-house developed test methods.
  • Usability Assessments: The SMTL offers the capability to develop, design and undertake usability assessments, building on our successful track record of usability studies of medical devices.
