Medical Director
Dr Martin Edwards is Medical Director at NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) and a Consultant Paediatrician at the Children’s Hospital for Wales. He joined NWSSP as Deputy Medical Director in 2024 with a strong commitment to supporting staff, strengthening governance and helping NHS Wales deliver safe, consistent services through a Once for Wales approach.
Martin’s clinical background is in paediatrics, where he continues to practise alongside his executive role. He has held a range of senior leadership positions across NHS Wales, including national roles within Health Education and Improvement Wales and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. These roles have given him wide‑ranging experience in medical education, workforce leadership, professional standards and complex case management, working closely with Health Boards, Trusts, regulators and Welsh Government.
At NWSSP, Martin works in partnership with colleagues across all divisions to promote a positive speaking‑up culture, embed the Duty of Quality and ensure fair, compassionate and transparent governance. He is passionate about workforce wellbeing, inclusive leadership and creating systems that support staff to do their best work for patients and the public.
Outside of work, Martin is Wales‑based and values time with family & friends. He can often be seen out walking his red fox labrador. He has a keen interest in coaching, mentoring and wellbeing initiatives, and brings these interests into his leadership style, focusing on listening, collaboration and continuous improvement.
