NHS Wales Shared Service Partnership (NWSSP) Student Streamlining is a national process in Wales that supports final year healthcare students as they move from University into their first role as newly qualified professionals. It provides a fair, consistent and transparent way of matching students to available vacancies from across the NHS in Wales and means students only have to complete one application and can apply for up to 4 roles across Wales.
NHS Wales organisations submit suitable and available vacancies to the NWSSP Student Streamlining team, be added to NHS Student Hub (also known as the Matching scheme system). During a ‘live’ period of time, students are invited to complete an application form and select up to 4 preferences from the vacancies that have been added to the system. Once applications are submitted the scheme closes to allow recruiting managers in Health Boards to review the student applications. Through a shortlisting process the recruiting managers then rank the students in order of preference. Once students have selected their preferences and managers have ranked the candidates an a algorithm is run, this is weighted in the student preference favour. It is the algorithm which then allocates students to one of their preference roles. The NWSSP Student Streamlining team then contact both students and managers to inform them of the outcome. Once this is complete, students then follow the standard Agenda for Change Recruitment process, in which they are subject to pre-employment checks before agreeing a start date subject to successfully completing these checks.
Should a student not be allocated a role as part of the matching scheme, they then move to the Additional Allocation phase where they will be invited to join the escalation process. The NWSSP Student Streamlining team will continue working with students and health boards to identify a suitable post.
The Student Streamlining team is part of the NHS Wales Recruitment team, sitting in the Employment Services Directorate of NWSSP. The team are responsible for the administration of the Student Streamlining and for supporting students and Health Boards through each stage.
