Meet The PROMPT Wales National Team

Jonathan Webb

Jonathan is Head of Safety & Learning with the Welsh Risk Pool and was instrumental in the inception of the PROMPT Wales programme. Jonathan maintains a huge interest in the programme, providing leadership support to the National PROMPT Wales Team.

Sarah Hookes

Sarah is a Registered Midwife and formally the National Lead Midwife for PROMPT Wales. In her role as Assistant Head of Safety and Learning, Sarah maintains the strategic leadership for the Welsh Risk Pool’s Maternity and Neonatal Safety & Learning Programmes, including PROMPT Wales.

Beth Attorre

Beth is an experienced nurse and midwife and Senior Safety & Learning Advisor with the Welsh Risk Pool, supporting Maternity Safety & Learning Programmes including PROMPT Wales. Beth is also Project Coordinator for our IFS Wales programme.

Sara Jelfs

Sara is an experienced nurse and midwife and Senior Safety & Learning Advisor with the Welsh Risk pool, supporting Maternity Safety & Learning Programmes including PROMPT Wales, IFS Wales and MoNET Wales.

Mr Niladri Sengupta

Nil is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and is the Clinical Lead for the Welsh Risk Pool Maternity Safety & Learning Programmes. Nil has been involved with PROMPT Wales since 2018.

Dr Dan Helme

Dan is a Consultant Obstetric Anaesthetist at The Grange University Hospital (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board) and is a member of the PROMPT Wales National Team.

Sarah Morris

Sarah is Consultant Midwife at Wye Valley NHS Trust. Sarah has been involved with PROMPT Wales since 2018, supporting implementation and sustainability and remains an integral member of the PROMPT Wales National Team.

Amy Hayman

Amy is a Practice Development Midwife at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board where she leads on PROMPT Wales training. In addition to her substantive post, Amy is a valued member of the PROMPT Wales National Team, supporting national events and quality assurance.

Sarah Hughes

Sarah is an operations Manager with the Welsh Risk pool. With a keen interest in safety and learning, Sarah provides administration support to the PROMPT Wales National Team.

What does a PROMPT Wales training day consist of?

PROMPT Wales is a full day training course, attended and facilitated by a multi-professional maternity team. The emphasis is on team working and communication, so delegates are allocated to multi-professional teams to take part in simulated obstetric emergencies in the clinical areas. Some examples would be managing an undiagnosed breech birth in a midwife-led unit or attending to a cardiac arrest in a pregnant woman. Community midwifery teams also attend A Community PROMPT Wales training where they train alongside paramedics and practice managing emergencies in a community setting.

What is the overall objective of the PROMPT Wales programme?

PROMPT Wales training focuses on effective management of emergency situations which may arise in pregnancy and childbirth. It emphasises the importance of teamwork and effective communication and gives teams the opportunity to practice rare emergencies in a simulated environment. As demonstrated in Southmead Hospital in Bristol and other maternity units in the UK and abroad, we expect to see improvements in safer outcomes for mothers and babies in Wales.

How will we know that PROMPT Wales training is effective?

Having collected retrospective data from maternity units around Wales, PROMPT Wales will make comparisons after agreed periods of time to establish whether improvements in clinical outcomes are evident. We are also interested in staff perception around team working and safety and have measured this using a Safety Attitude Questionnaire. Results from pre and post implementation demonstrated improvement in all six domains: Teamwork Safety Climate Perception of management Job satisfaction Working conditions and stress recognition. We are also keen to understand women’s perceptions of the care received during emergencies with regards to safety and communication and intend to gather information which will help to inform our training.
