NWSSP Medical Director appointment announced

 

NWSSP is pleased to announce that Ruth Alcolado has been appointed to the role of Medical Director.

Ruth Alcolado qualified from Southampton Medical School in 1987, and trained as a physician with an interest in gastroenterology and hepatology in London, Cambridge and Southampton before moving to Wales where she took up her first consultant job in Singleton, moving to Cwm Taf in 2000.

She has been heavily involved in medical education and training at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels over the past 20 years in Wales and is looking forward to working with the single lead employer team on this important project to improve the experience of trainees employed in Wales.

Ruth took up her first medical leadership role as chair of the Cwm Taf multidisciplinary clinical working group as she believes in all disciplines working together for the benefit of patients. Following this initial experience in medical leadership, she took up first, clinical director, then AMD and later deputy medical director roles in Cwm Taf and Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB.

Her work on transforming acute medical services lead to her first All Wales role. Ruth works for the NCCU as Deputy National Clinical Director for Urgent and Emergency Care alongside the role of Medical Director for NWSSP. As a result of her national role Ruth is familiar with the breadth and depth of challenge facing the whole of the NHS in Wales as we come out of the pandemic.

She is committed to providing a clinical voice for and clinical support to, the organisation as it develops a portfolio of clinical and clinical support services including ground-breaking services such as CIVAS, National Medical Examiners and the Single Lead Employer.

Ruth said; "Following the amazing work done to support NHS Wales through the pandemic this is an exciting time to join NWSSP. As the organisation develops a wider portfolio of clinically related services, I hope to be a clinical advocate for the Shared Services Partnership."
