NHS teams raise money in memory of colleague's daughter for the Young Lives Vs Cancer charity

A football game for the Young Lives vs Cancer charity was recently held on 1 October 2023 at Coleg Sir Gar, Llanelli in memory of NWSSP colleague Claire Green’s daughter Abby Fiola.  Abby was diagnosed with a rare form of Ovarian Cancer during 2022 and sadly passed away aged just 20 years old during 2023.

Young Lives vs Cancer support children and young people under 25 and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. They have supported Abby’s family from the beginning of Abby’s diagnosis through to her treatment and continue to help and support on an ongoing basis.

In an entertaining and high scoring match, Team Abby battled it out with a Swansea Bay University Health Board side who eventually came out on top in a 15-goal thriller in challenging conditions.

Reflecting on the Young Lives Vs Cancer charity game, organiser and NWSSP Payroll colleague Christopher Hampson said;

“I’ve been using Football as a fund-raising vessel for a number of years now. It wasn’t hard to get 2 squads of players together for the cause.”

“I think we all enjoyed ourselves and getting involved to help out, of course I’m disappointed to have lost but the real winner was the charity Young Lives Vs Cancer as we currently have over £500 on our justgiving page and expect that to soon top £600.”

“Many thanks to everyone involved- including Coleg Sir Gar for the support, those who played and attended and those who have donated. Thank you also to Unison Cymru for the sponsorship of our kits. It really is appreciated.”

The justgiving page is still open for donations and can be found via the following link: https://www.justgiving.com/page/abby
