What Do We Do?

Responsibility for the management of this site rests with the Directorate for Health Policy of the Department for Health and Social Services which resides within Welsh Government.

Our responsibilities include:

The provision of governance advice and guidance;
Liaison with other Health and Social Services Directorate General directorates who lead on the individual areas of governance policy and with other key stakeholders in healthcare governance.

What is Governance?

For the NHS in Wales, governance is defined by the NHS Confederation as:

"A system of accountability to citizens, service users, stakeholders and the wider community, within which healthcare organisations work, take decisions and lead their people to achieve their objectives."

In simple terms, it refers to the way in which NHS bodies ensure that they are doing the right things, in the right way, for the right people, in a manner that upholds the values set for the Welsh public sector.

The effectiveness of governance arrangements has a significant impact on how well NHS organisations meet their aims and objectives.
