Electronic Prescriptions for GPs and Prescribers

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) in primary care allows GPs and other prescribers to send prescriptions electronically to a dispenser of the patient’s choice.  It reduces our use of paper and makes the prescribing and dispensing process easier and more convenient for patients and health staff.

EPS is a secure digital service and may only be accessed by health professionals authorised to use it. It is not a clinical prescribing system but is used to manage the workflow of prescriptions from prescriber to dispenser.

EPS is a key part of Digital Health and Care Wales’ Digital Medicines programmes, which are delivering the benefits of a fully digital prescribing approach in all care settings in Wales. EPS is being delivered in collaboration with the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership.

Benefits:

  • GPs and other prescribers can sign individual or multiple prescriptions electronically.
  • If a patient has a telephone or video consultation, prescriptions can be sent to the patient's nominated pharmacy without the need for the patient to visit the surgery just to pick up the paper prescription form.
  • There is no need for paper prescriptions to be delivered by staff or posted to the pharmacy, saving staff resources.
  • The EPS prescription tracker allows healthcare professionals to see the location of an electronic prescription.
