Thomas Toyne

Thomas obtained his LLB Law degree and the LPC at Cardiff University, and qualified as a Solicitor in January 2016.

Thomas began working for the NHS as a Special Investigator, dealing with claims for NHS Continuing Health care funding. He then moved to Legal & Risk as a paralegal before securing his training contract in 2014. Thomas works in the Clinical Negligence team as a Senior Solicitor, dealing predominantly with claims brought against Swansea Bay University Health Board and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University NHS Trust. Thomas handles a variety of claims, including high value birth injury cases, orthopaedic, spinal injury, brain injury, ophthalmology, and psychiatric cases.

Thomas also has previous experience working as part of the Complex Patient (Court of Protection) Team. Thomas has experience representing clients at contested court hearings concerning Deprivation of Liberty Appeals. Thomas also has a keen interest in the Re-X procedure and previously managed a number of these cases. Thomas is also regularly instructed to advise and provide advocacy at inquests involving a range of issues, including resources, mental health and human rights concerns.

Thomas has a key role in coordinating Legal & Risk’s quarterly clinical negligence newsletter and also enjoys providing training sessions to the NHS on topics such as breach of duty and causation, consent, and giving evidence as a witness. As a member of the Social Committee, Thomas also enjoys arranging social events for staff at Legal & Risk.

Thomas grew up in Wiltshire but moved to Cardiff for his studies and has stayed since. In his spare time, he enjoys eating out, rowing at Llandaff Rowing Club, playing tennis, and going to the gym (occasionally).
