This month, we bring you the Personal Injury Team of NWSSP Legal & Risk Services.
Our PI team is led by Andrew Hynes with a diverse mix of CILEX graduate, solicitor, trainee solicitor, Network 75 student, legal secretaries and paralegals.
The department deals with personal injury claims across all of the Welsh Health Boards. Each Health Board is dealt with by a member of the team and close relationships with our clients are essential. The claims dealt with can range from relatively low value slip and trip claims to more complex matters such as mesothelioma and incidents resulting in permanent injuries.
Andrew has been in post since 1998 and has become involved in a range of projects; most recently being the NHS Anti-Violence Collaborative titled “Obligatory Responses to Violence in Healthcare”, which we are working towards publishing as a Welsh Health Circular. Some of the aims of the Collaborative are as follows:
The team work well together to deliver an excellent service to our clients, including a bi-annual education day. PI Day allows colleagues involved in the legal process from across NHS Wales Health Boards the chance to update and refresh their legal knowledge and provides an opportunity to network.
Guest speakers including Barristers have also kindly provided talks on a range of subjects and exciting mock trials.
PI Day is always well attended and receives a plethora of positive feedback.
This year for the first time, NWSSP have taken on a student as part of the Network 75 programme; a combined work and study route to a degree, in partnership with the University of South Wales.
This unique opportunity allows the students to apply their academic knowledge to real-life work within NWSSP. Amy Bartlett joined the PI Team as part of the programme and has “already learnt a great deal of information within the office which I can translate onto my course to help with my studies. I have a far greater insight of what being a paralegal/solicitor entails and know what is expected of me in order to fulfil these roles one day…I am learning every single day and love every aspect of the scheme.”
Amy is a great asset to the team and has impressed us all with her willingness to assist.
The PI team were recognised as Team of the Year at the NWSSP Staff Recognition Award 2017.
The judges were impressed with the team’s mission statement “Be the Best, Do the Most, Innovate”. The mission statement is the hub of the team’s innovative practice and the team’s participation and enthusiasm.
The Judge’s commented: “The team are also involved in a range of fundraising activities which take place outside of the work place. The judges felt this team were worthy winners for NWSSP team of the year 2017”.
