Biocompatibility

SMTL have over 30 years’ experience in assessing biocompatibility using the ISO 10993-5 in vitro cytotoxicity test. This test evaluates the general toxicity of medical devices and materials. SMTL have tested numerous of medical devices including urethral catheters, gloves, wound dressings, surgical masks and wheelchair materials.

Testing involves incubation of mammalian cells with extracts from a device to determine the biological response. This allows us to use a non-animal model to assess any potential detrimental effects of medical devices or their components, in a highly controlled manner.
