NHS Wales Testing Exercises

SMTL collaborates closely with NWSSP Procurement Services (NWSSP PS) and NHS Wales partners to develop strategies that deliver high-quality medical devices for NHS staff and patients in Wales. Assurance of procured medical devices is achieved through comprehensive technical documentation reviews and laboratory testing.

Depending on the product category, SMTL conducts initial technical assurance checks on suppliers, manufacturers, and their tendered products, followed by laboratory testing of devices against relevant British, national, or international standards. Only products that successfully pass these rigorous assurance processes proceed to the financial evaluation stages of a tender.

Contract documents make clear that Procurement/SMTL reserve the right to publish the results of all tests and assessments conducted on tendered products without restriction or censorship. This approach ensures transparency throughout the process and enables the sharing of results with other NHS organisations and the wider medical device sector.
