Equality, diversity and human rights are embedded in all aspects of the NHS in Wales through the Values and Standards of Behaviour Framework, Standard 2 of the Healthcare Standards for Wales and the Governance Framework.
They are also terms used to define values of society, enshrined in UK Legislation, and UN Treaties. They seek to promote equality of opportunity for all, giving every individual the chance to achieve their potential, free from prejudice and discrimination, and the right to be treated with fairness, respect, equality, dignity and autonomy.
The legislative framework requires public authorities to promote equality in everything that they do. Incumbent within this are equality duties which must be undertaken.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), and its Welsh counterpart, has a statutory remit to promote and monitor human rights and to protect, enforce and promote equality.
