What does a MoNET Wales day consist of?

MoNET Wales is a full day training course, attended and facilitated by a multi-professional neonatal team. The emphasis is on team working and communication, so delegates are allocated to multiprofessional teams to take part in simulated neonatal emergencies in the clinical areas. Some examples would be managing a preterm birth or a deteriorating ventilated neonate.

What is the overall objective of MoNET Wales programme?

The overall objective is to improve outcomes for babies and families through annual attendance of all members of the neonatal team on a MoNET Wales training day. Having collected baseline clinical outcome data from neonatal units around Wales, we will evaluate the data after agreed periods of time to establish the impact of MoNET Wales.

How will we know that MoNET Wales is effective?

In addition to clinical outcomes, we are also interested in staff perception around team working and safety and have measured this using a Safety Attitude Questionnaire. Results from a post implementation survey will evaluate the impact on six domains: Teamwork Safety Climate Perception of management Job satisfaction Working conditions and stress recognition.

With a focus on the impact of human factors, we expect to see the embedding of practices such as declaring the emergency, SBAR handover, closed loop communication and the use of management algorithms. MoNET Wales is ‘more than just training.’
